President Kennedy and Civil Rights Research Paper

prexy Kennedy and Civil Rights - Research Paper Example causality Shelly Sommer presents John F. Kennedy in his book, John F Kennedy His life and legacy in many roles such as a boy, a young adolescent, a shooter of wars, a husband, a great politician, and finally the youngest death chair of America. But the question should be raised that whether John F. Kennedy really cargond about civil rights or it was dependable to defeat Nixon in office and be the President of America? The votes of African American people were as much important for him as the whites and so President Kennedy has to make his way to the office anyhow. When two African American students, Vivian Malone and James Hood decided to take admission in the University of Alabama in summers of 1963, President John F. Kennedy- a spirited and energetic leader of that time led the movement of Civil rights to let these students enter the university. He challenged the southern courts to take none of the situation and take int o consideration this issue to grant equal rights to African Americans as well. On the evening of September 30, 1963, President delivered a speech in which he issued a declaration that Mississippi should abolish segregation and let African American students attend the college. ... He asked for a federal legislature for the rights of African Americans and thus his words were transformed into actions after his death when the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was enacted. ( Blaustein, Albert P, and Robert L. Zangrando. Civil Rights and the American Negro A Documentary History). Critics of Kennedy Supporting Civil Rights close to people, however, believed that John F. Kennedy was not much interested in civil rights rather he was famous for Cold War issues and Cuban Missile Crisis. This belief was not layerless. Kennedys attitudes towards Civil Rights before the election campaign proved it to be true. He voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1957 by Eisenhower. Kennedy wanted to serve the Democr ats in the elections of 1960s, and to do so he has to oppose the bill as Democrats were in the opposition to the bill at that time. Finally, Kennedy won the elections as leader of the Democratic Party in 1960 and defeated Nixon. This act of Kennedy proves that all he did was his personal gains and he has no interests in the rights or equality of African Americans. Kennedy suddenly converted or changed his point of view when he was nominated as a candidate from Democratic Party for the Presidential Elections of 1960. He delivered speeches promising equal rights to African Americans and preserving their dignity and sovereignty. Historians are confused over this abrupt change in the attitude. Supporters of Kennedy see the antagonism toward the Civil Act of 1957 as a political necessity.

Few years before the war though, there had been indications of difficulties and tensions with the relationship between the foreign settlers and the locals. Response paper - Article ExampleThe problems of the ESL students are mainly at the sentence level. Their write problems are diametric as compared to the students of primordial expressers. It begins at the word and sentence levels. They face difficulties in every component of the sentence, and with spelling, grammar and word usage. The essential difference between the native speakers and ESL students is that the former rouse speak English correctly, as such they can also write correctly. The latter have skills in their native language. They have ideas but their issues relate to the use of earmark words and grammatical errors confront them. Personal observations/comments On close examination of the article, I realized the importance of the rater and the challenges the ESL students have to face in reading or piece of music in English. They have problems in several segments of life, and racial segregation overrides all other considerations. Low self-efficacy, financial difficultie s, separation from immediate family members and friends, highly different cultural environment, all these contribute to the problems related to assimilation in the mainstream society. Student behavior in classroom in America differs much and the discipline is loose. They can come late to the class, question teachers, cut jokes and this type of behavior is not accepted in the Chines classrooms. Their main difficulties are in the areas of form, morphology, terminology and syntax which quit from their native language. They may have ideas but lack expression as such the audience may not be able to follow the contents. The difficulties for erudition of skills in writing differ for various cultural groups of ESL students. Before reading the article I used to consider the problem of the ESL students writing in isolation. On the strength of the various issues mentioned in the article, I now realize that it is but one of the multifarious problems faced by the student and the meliorate abi lity of the student in writing may address to partial solution of some of those issues. ESL students are a heterogeneous lot. Much difference exists til now when the students are from the same country as they belong to different States/Regions, where slang, tradition and culture differ. With such varied cultural and linguistic backgrounds the assessment of their English writing is beset with problems. Some sort of reconciliation will have to be worked out to arrive at an authentic solution, as it concerns the career of the combustible jr. generation. In a competitive job market, each mark, each recommendation counts. So, the rater may build or break the career of an ESL student, unintentionally though, with the deficient dust of rating. The author is aware of this complexity and has mentioned twenty reviews and given details of those empirical studies as for the factors affecting rating of ESL writing in North American tutor contexts, segregating them as rater-related and task-re lated and has high alighted their important components. These factors are not exclusive and research on the subject is a continual process and the author has informed that in the light of the experience gained, gaps and proposed directions for future research have been identified. The author emphasizes a number of times in the article that assessment of writing is the problematic area for which no cut and dry formula cannot be submitted as the final word on the subject. He quotes Speck and Jones (1998), there are more problems than solutions -problems of inter-grader

Descartes Philosophy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Descartes Philosophy - Essay ExampleThe cause of the magnetism is the magnet. This form of circular causal reasoning would boast had been meagre for Descartes and it is in this context of a world that is founded on such archaic Aristotelian principles that he meditates the cogito. Descartes wanted knowledge derived from natural science to have the cause and distinct properties of mathematical and geometrical concepts. Descartes presents his method in The Meditations. In order to evaluate its signifi shadowerce to his own philosophy it is imperative to demonstrate how he reaches the certainty of the cogito. In order to build a proper epistemic approach to knowledge Descartes asks us to suspend our beliefs in propositions whose truth it is possible to doubt flush in the slightest. As Descartes advances through the first meditation, our principles for acknowledging reality are elevated ever higher as he demolishes the capacities of recollection and the senses and even rationale in this respect. He presents three skeptical arguments to fortify doubt, the dream argument, the interventionist creator- immortal and the imperfect creator/imperfect creation arguments. Discussion and Analysis The first argument, the dream argument says that at that place is no definite way to discern between when I am awake and when I am pipe dream therefore, it is possible that I am dreaming right now and hence that all of my perceptions and sensations are false. It can be said against this that dreams are often hazy and are surreal with an unusual and we can always tell if we are able to dream. But for every notion we have of defining a boundary between dreams and being in a state of awakeness. One other problem with the dream argument as an argument for universal doubt is that it does not cause problems for self-evident truths such as mathematical and geometrical concepts. To introduce the hyperbolic doubt Descartes needs to arrive at the cogito he must conceive of an argument t hat would make mathematics and uniform validity dubitable. In order to do this he conceives of divinity as an all-powerful creator. Because of the omnipotence of God it is possible for Him to disrupt the truth of ideas we perceive as distinctly and clearly such as tautologies and analytic mathematical propositions. The first objection against this argument is that some people would not believe in a God that had sufficient power as to remove the certainty from clear and distinct ideas. Descartes reasons out of this problem by arguing that if our creator-God is less than perfect then we have even more reason to doubt because of our origins from an imperfect being. The other problem from this rebuttal is that assuming that there is a perfect God then it would be contradictory to his perfect being to deceive us. Another point, a God who deceives could have created our minds so that they could we can always have frequently or so always, have false thoughts. Accordingly, when we are c alculating 2+2=4 and believing it to be self-evident we could be suffering an intervention from an omnipotent God to trick us to believing. It would seem that Descartes has now called even reason itself into doubt. By showing all knowledge is dubitable in the first meditation the deduction of the Cogito for Descartes becomes clear. What if Descartes would be able to offer a cognitive principle that would

A Proposed Health Promotion Campaign Against Obesity Assignment

A Proposed Health Promotion Campaign Against Obesity - Assignment ExampleThe factors of the accessibility of junk foods and the trend of supersizing meals, not to character reference the availability of high caloric foods of low nutritional value but are highly appealing to children because of its rich taste are mainly responsible for(p) for them getting slight materially fit (Buchholz, 2005). Also, the environmental progress of eradicating some parks and natural playgrounds for children to build buildings for industry and residences may not benefit the somatogenic health of children due to the fact that they have less access to locations where they can expend their excess physical energy (Frieden, Galvez. & Landrigan, 2003). However, the most common cause of the lessen in physical activity of children is that technology has made it easier to fall into a sedentary life. Children are more than adequately entertained by the multitude of choices on television shows, internet sites , computer games, etc. Nowadays, most children are homebound, engrossed in computer games, watching videos, surfing the web for hours, etc. Children find less need to play outside because there are a lot of available conveniences and entertainment indoors for them. Hence, playing games, running around, climbing trees, bicycling, etc. are slowly becoming activities of the past. Physical exercise for these children is not given much priority anymore. Many parents enroll their children in dance classes, sports, etc. precisely for them to have physical activity. Obesity in children has been on the rise and one factor is neglect of physical activity. Experts agree that the combination of the availability of energy-dense processed foods and lack of physical activity may be the culprit of obesity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provide data that suggest that the number of children attending daily physical education classes declined from 18.3% in 1995 to 12% in 2001 .
